Sleep and Blood Pressure: How Many Hours Adults Need

Quick answer

Sleep and blood pressure are tied together: the CDC says enough sleep can help lower the risk of chronic conditions including heart disease and high blood pressure. Adults 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours, ages 61 to 64 need 7 to 9, and 65 and older need 7 to 8. Count back from your wake time to find your bedtime.

01The numbers

How many hours of sleep do adults need?

Adults 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours a night, according to the CDC (CDC, About sleep).

The target rises a little in the early sixties and narrows after 65. The table has each range.

CDC sleep hours for adults by age
AgeHours a nightBed at 11:30 pm, wake at
18 to 607 or more6:30 am or later
61 to 647 to 96:30 to 8:30 am
65 and older7 to 86:30 to 7:30 am

The third column is arithmetic, not a CDC figure. It shows what 7, 8 and 9 hours look like from one bedtime.

03Count back

What time should you go to bed?

Count back from your wake time: subtract at least 7 hours, then add the time it takes you to fall asleep.

Worked example, with real numbers. You wake at 6:30 am and need 7 hours. Subtract 7 hours: 11:30 pm. If you take 20 minutes to drop off, get into bed at 11:10 pm.

  • Pick a fixed wake time first. Bedtime follows from it.
  • Keep the same wake time on days off, so the count-back stays honest.
  • Move bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night until you hit the target.
  • Take blood pressure at the same time daily, with rest first (AHA, Home blood pressure monitoring).
The cuff cares about timing.

The AHA says to rest 5 minutes, sit with your arm supported and take two readings a minute apart. A poor night is no reason to skip your usual routine. Log the number you get, then move on.

Shifting 15 minutes a night moves a midnight bedtime to 11:00 pm in four nights. Many people find small moves easier to keep than one big one.

04Where a capsule fits

Where does a daily capsule fit a routine?

A daily capsule fits any slot you can repeat, since the Melonex label prints no time of day.

The label's directions: one capsule a day with 8 oz of water, up to two. The seller's FAQ suggests mornings, which is the seller's suggestion and not on the label. Pick a spot that does not push your bedtime later.

  1. 01

    List your medicines

Before the first capsule, write down every pill you take and show the list and the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist. Blood-pressure drugs, nitrates and ED drugs matter most.

  2. 02

One capsule, 8 oz of water

Swallow one capsule with a full 8-ounce glass of water, as the label says. Check the safety seal on a new bottle first.

  3. 03

    Same slot every day

Pair it with something you already do every day. The label allows up to two capsules a day; it never says more.

  4. 04

Check in at day 30 and before 60

Log your home cuff readings and how you feel. The seller's money-back window closes at day 60, so decide before then.

Melonex is not a sleep aid and makes no sleep claim. Ask your doctor about any new supplement, and read the how to take it page first.

Before you take it

Melonex is not a treatment; it is a dietary supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood-pressure medicine, nitrates for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil or tadalafil, a potassium-sparing diuretic (amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), a blood thinner, or diabetes medicine, or if you have had a recent heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can add to these. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

06FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

Can poor sleep raise blood pressure?

The CDC links enough sleep to a lower risk of high blood pressure and heart disease (CDC, About sleep). Short sleep is one risk factor among several. If you suspect a sleep problem, ask your doctor, and keep taking prescribed medicine.

Is 6 hours of sleep enough for adults?

Not by the CDC numbers. Adults 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours, and the other age bands start at 7 (CDC, About sleep). If 6 hours is your habit, move bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night.

Should I take my blood pressure in the morning or at night?

Pick one time and keep it. The AHA advises taking readings at the same time each day, two readings a minute apart, after resting 5 minutes (AHA, Home blood pressure monitoring). A steady time makes your log easier for your doctor to read.
