01Inside

What is inside one Melonex capsule?

One Melonex capsule holds a 500 mg blend of three amino-acid lines, in a cellulose shell with two helper ingredients.

The three lines are L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-arginine HCl. They are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). No single amount is printed.

The drawing below splits the blend evenly, only for scale. The real split is unknown. Each line has a ceiling: 500, 250 and 167 mg.

02Capsule only

Are Melonex capsules the same as pills, gummies or drops?

Melonex capsules are capsules only. The label shows no gummy, no drop, no powder and no syrup.

People search for Melonex pills, gummies, drops and a drop-by-drop dose. The label answers all of them: one vegetable capsule, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, swallowed with 8 oz of water. A capsule is a shell around powder. It is not a pressed tablet and not a chew.

Listings for gummies, liquids or powders under a similar name are not this product. Some products sold elsewhere under similar names contain a drug called meloxicam. This label lists none, and it is for adults, not for animals. The full story is on the name mix-up page.

03Melon?

What does melon extract do in Melonex?

Nothing, because the label lists no melon extract. The name suggests a fruit, but the three blend lines are amino-acid compounds.

Citrulline was first isolated from watermelon, which is where the name idea comes from. The Melonex label does not say its citrulline comes from melon. It prints L-citrulline DL-malate, a citrulline bound to malate, and no fruit extract.

We found no printed claim about melon on the bottle. Any melon benefit you read elsewhere is not a label fact.

On the label

L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine AKG, L-arginine HCl.

Not on the label

Melon extract, watermelon, fruit powder or any herb.

How much can one capsule hold, and how much do two hold?

One capsule holds at most 500 mg of its biggest line. Two capsules, the label maximum, hold at most 1,000 mg of it.

Flip between the tabs to see each line's ceiling. The two arginine lines together can weigh at most 333 mg in one capsule, or 667 mg in two. These weights include the malate, AKG and HCl parts, so the pure amino acid weighs less.

Ceilings from the label order (place k holds at most 500/k mg) (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). The label: "As a dietary supplement, take one (1) capsule daily with an 8 oz. glass of water. May take up to two (2) capsules daily."

NIH notes citrulline malate is about 57% citrulline by weight (NIH ODS, Supplements for Exercise). Melonex prints no ratio, so if it follows that figure, 500 mg of the salt carries about 285 mg of citrulline at most.

05Pills and powders

Is Melonex a blood pressure supplement powder or a heart health gummy?

No. Melonex is a heart-support capsule by label wording, not a powder to stir or a gummy to chew.

The front calls it "ADVANCED SUPPORT" with "Heart Support*", "Circulation Support*" and "Natural Formula*". The star ties each phrase to the FDA statement: not evaluated, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

06Dose reality

How does one capsule compare with studied doses?

One capsule is a small fraction of studied doses. Trials used 3-9 g a day of L-citrulline and 4-24 g a day of L-arginine.

In 8 small trials, citrulline at those doses lowered systolic pressure about 4 mm Hg (Avicenna J Phytomed 2019, L-citrulline and BP meta-analysis). In 11 small trials, arginine did so by about 5 mm Hg (Am Heart J 2011, L-arginine and BP meta-analysis). One capsule's ceiling is 17% of the low citrulline dose and 8% of the low arginine dose. No trial tested Melonex.

Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. Arginine and citrulline can add to blood-pressure drugs, nitrates and erectile-dysfunction drugs, so show the bottle to your pharmacist (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (WebMD, L-citrulline).

08FAQ

One-capsule questions

What is the L-citrulline content of one Melonex capsule?

At most 500 mg of L-citrulline DL-malate, and likely less. It is the first of three lines in a 500 mg blend, but the split is not printed. An even split would give about 167 mg. The pure citrulline weighs less than the salt.

Are Melonex pills the same as capsules?

Yes, in everyday speech. Melonex comes as a vegetable capsule, 60 to a bottle. It is not a pressed tablet, and the label lists no gummy, chew or liquid form. Take one with an 8 oz glass of water.

Is there a Melonex drops or gummies version?

No. The label shows one form, the capsule. Drops, gummies or syrups sold under a similar name are not this product, and some contain a different drug. Check the Supplement Facts for L-citrulline DL-malate to be sure.

Does Melonex contain melon extract?

No melon extract is listed. The label names L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine AKG and L-arginine HCl, plus a cellulose capsule and two helpers. Citrulline got its name from watermelon, but the label makes no melon claim.

What is the capsule shell made of?

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-cellulose material. The label also lists microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate as other ingredients. Together they hold and move the powder; they are not in the 500 mg blend.

Is Melonex a powder I can mix in a drink?

No. The label gives directions for swallowing one whole capsule with 8 oz of water. It prints no mixing directions, so do not open capsules to make a powder drink.
