Heart Health Supplements CoQ10: What Statin Users Ask
Heart health supplements CoQ10 are popular with people who take statins, but the evidence is mixed. NIH's NCCIH says overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain, heart failure research is inconclusive, and pressure effects are probably small. Melonex contains no CoQ10.

01The question
What do heart health supplements CoQ10 claim to do?
Heart health supplements CoQ10 are sold for heart support and for the muscle aches some statin users report.
CoQ10 is short for coenzyme Q10. People often ask about it because they take a statin and hear that statins may lower CoQ10 levels.
The idea is simple, and that is part of its appeal. The proof is harder to find than the ads suggest.
The question to settle is not whether CoQ10 is popular. It is what trials show. The NIH center for complementary health gives its read of the trials (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). We report only what that page says.
02Evidence
Does CoQ10 help statin muscle pain or blood pressure?
The overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain, and it probably has no meaningful effect on blood pressure.
NCCIH says individual studies varied, but the evidence as a whole does not back CoQ10 for statin-related muscle pain. For blood pressure, the small amount of evidence suggests no meaningful effect (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
| Topic | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Statin muscle pain | Overall evidence does not support it |
| Heart failure | Research is inconclusive |
| Blood pressure | Probably no meaningful effect |
| Side effects | No serious ones reported; mild insomnia or stomach upset |
| Interactions | May interact with warfarin and insulin |
No serious side effects were reported, though mild insomnia or stomach upset can occur. Mild is not the same as none, so watch how you feel and report changes. The page was last updated in January 2019, so ask your doctor whether newer work changes the picture.
03Statin users
Is it safe to add CoQ10 if you take a statin?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Keep taking your statin as prescribed.
CardioSmart says take medicines exactly as prescribed and do not stop one without consulting your care team (CardioSmart (ACC), Blood pressure medicines). If statin muscle aches bother you, call your doctor. Do not drop the pill on your own, and do not treat CoQ10 as a swap.
NCCIH notes possible interactions with warfarin and insulin (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). That matters if you take a blood thinner or diabetes medicine alongside your statin.
Our supplements and heart medicines guide shows how to build the list a pharmacist needs.
04Not the same
Is Melonex a CoQ10 supplement?
No. Melonex lists no CoQ10. Its blend is three amino-acid lines, 500 mg in all.
The three lines are L-Citrulline DL-Malate, L-Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate and L-Arginine HCL. By label order, one capsule can hold at most 500 mg, 250 mg and 167 mg of them.
Studies on the amino acids used grams, not milligrams. Trials of L-citrulline used 3-9 g a day (Avicenna J Phytomed 2019, L-citrulline and BP meta-analysis), and trials of L-arginine used 4-24 g a day (Am Heart J 2011, L-arginine and BP meta-analysis). One capsule cannot reach the low end of either range, even at the label's two-capsule maximum.
The bars below set those ceilings next to the gram doses used in studies. No trial tested Melonex.
L-citrulline DL-malate
≤500 mgplace 1 of 3One capsule's ceiling is 17% of the low end of the studied dose. (Avicenna J Phytomed 2019, L-citrulline and BP meta-analysis)
Both arginine lines together

Coral bars: the most one capsule (and the 2-capsule label maximum) can hold, from the label order (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). Real amounts are not printed and are likely lower. Teal bars: daily amounts used in studies; the pale extension shows a range. The weights on the label include the malate, alpha-ketoglutarate and HCl parts, so the pure amino acid is less again.
See what each line is on the ingredients page.
05Next step
What should you ask before buying any heart supplement?
Ask what it is for, what it interacts with, and what evidence is behind it.
Take the bottle and your medicine list to the pharmacist. Ask the three questions in that order. If the answers are thin, wait.
A good answer names the evidence and its limits. A weak answer repeats the ad. You can also compare two bottles on one yardstick: the ingredient, the amount per capsule and the cost per day, so a bigger claim does not win just by sounding bigger.
Melonex is a supplement capsule, not a heart medicine, and it does not replace a statin or any other prescription.

Prices listed on the seller's order page; confirm at checkout. The 2-bottle kit costs $158, with $9.99 shipping. Ask your doctor about your medicines first. 60-day money-back guarantee per the seller.
Melonex is not a treatment; it is a dietary supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood-pressure medicine, nitrates for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil or tadalafil, a potassium-sparing diuretic (amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), a blood thinner, or diabetes medicine, or if you have had a recent heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can add to these. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
06FAQ
Melonex questions people ask
Does a statin lower CoQ10 levels?
That claim is common on supplement pages, but the NCCIH page we read does not give numbers for it. It says overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Ask your doctor what applies to you.
Can CoQ10 interact with blood thinners?
Yes, it may. NCCIH says CoQ10 may interact with warfarin and with insulin (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Tell your doctor or pharmacist before you start it, and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.
What dose of CoQ10 do statin users take?
We give no CoQ10 dose. The NIH page we read lists no numeric dose. Dose depends on the product and your health, so ask your doctor or pharmacist rather than copying a number from an ad.
