Melonex and Lisinopril: What to Ask Before You Combine

Quick answer

Melonex and lisinopril need a doctor's answer first. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor for blood pressure, and the blend inside Melonex can add to blood pressure drugs. ACE inhibitors also hold on to potassium. This post does not say the pair is safe. It gives you five questions to bring to your doctor or pharmacist.

01The pair

Can you take Melonex and lisinopril together?

Only your doctor or pharmacist can say whether Melonex and lisinopril fit together for you, because both can lower pressure and the drug affects potassium.

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor for blood pressure. Its drug page asks you to keep a written list of every medicine and dietary supplement and bring it to appointments (MedlinePlus, Lisinopril).

Melonex is a supplement, not a drug. The label lists a 500 mg blend of L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine AKG and L-arginine HCL. Mayo Clinic notes arginine can push pressure too low alongside blood pressure drugs (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

No trial tested Melonex with lisinopril. We cannot call the pair safe.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not skip or change a lisinopril dose to start a supplement. Tell your doctor first.

02Potassium

Why does potassium come up with lisinopril?

Potassium comes up because ACE inhibitors reduce how much potassium the kidneys excrete, which can lead to high blood potassium (NIH ODS, Potassium (professionals)).

The NIH fact sheet says experts recommend monitoring potassium in people who take ACE inhibitors, mainly when the kidneys are impaired (NIH ODS, Potassium (professionals)). The lisinopril page lists potassium supplements as a possible interaction and says to ask before using potassium salt substitutes (MedlinePlus, Lisinopril).

Melonex lists no potassium. The open question is the arginine in the blend. Drugs.com reports high potassium in people with liver or kidney problems who took arginine (Drugs.com, L-arginine monograph). A capsule holds at most 250 mg of arginine AKG and 167 mg of arginine HCl, a small fraction of the gram doses behind that report.

03Ask first

What should you ask your doctor about lisinopril?

Ask five things, and write the answers beside your medicine list.

  1. Pressure

Could Melonex push my pressure below 90/60 on top of lisinopril?

  2. Potassium

Do I need a potassium blood test if I start it?

  3. Kidneys and liver

Do my kidney or liver results change your answer?

  4. Salt substitutes

Is my low-sodium salt substitute fine?

  5. Warning signs

What dizziness or faintness means call you?

Low pressure means below 90/60. Signs are dizziness, fainting, blurry vision, confusion and weakness (NHLBI, Low blood pressure). Our Melonex and BP medicines guide covers the other drug classes.

04Fit check

Does Melonex fit your situation at all?

Answer six quick questions to see which of your medicines or conditions should go to a doctor first.

The check flags nitrates, ED drugs, heart attack history, pregnancy, blood thinners and more. It is not medical advice. It only tells you what to ask. Melonex is for adults, not animals; see Melonex and pets.

1. Do you take nitrates for chest pain or an erectile-dysfunction drug (sildenafil, tadalafil)?
2. Have you had a heart attack in the past year?
3. Do you take blood-pressure medicine or a potassium-sparing diuretic (spironolactone, amiloride, triamterene)?
4. Is this for someone pregnant, nursing or under 18?
5. Do you take a blood thinner, or have kidney or liver disease?
6. Is this for a pet or farm animal?

The lisinopril page also warns of lightheadedness after diarrhea, vomiting or heavy sweating (MedlinePlus, Lisinopril). That is a drug fact, not a Melonex one.

Before you take it

Melonex is not a treatment; it is a dietary supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood-pressure medicine, nitrates for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil or tadalafil, a potassium-sparing diuretic (amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), a blood thinner, or diabetes medicine, or if you have had a recent heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can add to these. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

06FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

Does Melonex interact with lisinopril?

No trial tested the pair, so no one can say. Two concerns exist: the blend's arginine may add to the pressure-lowering of a blood pressure drug, and ACE inhibitors affect potassium. Before you start, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Does Melonex have potassium in it?

No potassium is printed on the Supplement Facts panel. The blend lists L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine AKG and L-arginine HCL, plus a cellulose shell, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. Potassium risk with arginine mainly applies to kidney or liver impairment.

Can I use a salt substitute with lisinopril?

Ask your doctor first. The lisinopril drug page says to talk to your doctor before using salt substitutes that contain potassium. That advice is about the drug, and applies whether or not you take a supplement.

Should I stop lisinopril to try Melonex?

No. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. A supplement is not a substitute, and the label says to consult a physician if you have a known medical condition. Raise it at your next visit or call your pharmacist.
