L-Arginine Dose for Blood Pressure: Grams, Not Milligrams

Quick answer

The L-arginine dose for blood pressure in 11 small trials was 4 to 24 grams a day, with a median near 9 grams. Melonex's two arginine lines can weigh at most 333 mg together in one capsule. That is about 8% of the lowest trial dose. No trial tested Melonex.

01Trial doses

What L-arginine dose did blood pressure trials use?

The L-arginine dose for blood pressure in trials was 4 to 24 grams a day, with 9 grams as the median.

A 2011 meta-analysis pooled 11 randomized, placebo-controlled trials with 387 people. Systolic pressure fell by 5.39 mm Hg and diastolic by 2.66 mm Hg against placebo (Am Heart J 2011, L-arginine and BP meta-analysis).

Drugs.com adds that the trials ran 2 to 24 weeks, with a median of 4 weeks (Drugs.com, L-arginine monograph). The earlier trials were small.

Grams, not milligrams, did the work in those studies. A capsule is a different scale.

02One capsule

How much arginine can one Melonex capsule hold?

Two lines of the blend are arginine salts, and together they can weigh at most 333 mg in one capsule.

Line two, arginine alpha-ketoglutarate, can weigh at most 250 mg. Line three, arginine HCl, at most 167 mg. Blend items go in order of weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)), so those are ceilings.

They cannot both hit their ceiling. All three lines add up to 500 mg, and line one is heavier than both. An even split would put each line near 167 mg.

The salt weight also includes the alpha-ketoglutarate and HCl parts, so the pure arginine is lower still.

From the Supplement Facts panel. The three blend lines are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)), so each "≤" figure is a ceiling per capsule, not the real amount. The other ingredients are not part of the 500 mg.

03The gap

How far is a capsule from the trial dose?

The arginine pair tops out at about 8% of the lowest trial dose, and 2 capsules reach about 17% of it.

Take the 333 mg ceiling and divide it by the trial doses. Then do the same for two capsules, the label maximum, at 667 mg.

The studies and the capsule are on different scales. A trial result cannot be carried over to a capsule that no one tested. The arginine AKG page has the line-by-line view.

04Cautions

Who should skip arginine without a doctor's say?

Anyone who has had a recent heart attack, or who takes nitrates, blood pressure drugs or potassium-sparing diuretics, needs a doctor's say first.

In the VINTAGE MI trial, 153 people took 9 g of arginine a day after a first heart attack. Six died, against none on placebo, and the trial stopped early (ACC, VINTAGE MI trial summary). Arginine after a recent heart attack is not recommended by Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

Mayo also lists nitrates, ED drugs, blood pressure medicines and potassium-sparing diuretics as risks (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Read the full story in our heart attack and arginine guide.

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about any supplement.

05Your call

Is a 333 mg arginine ceiling worth paying for?

That depends on what you want: a gram-scale arginine dose is not on offer here, but a short, once-a-day label is.

If trial doses are your goal, this capsule is not built for them. If you want a plain routine and accept that the benefit is unproven, compare packs. The related read on HCl versus plain arginine shows how salts change the weight.

Before you take it

Melonex is not a treatment; it is a dietary supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood-pressure medicine, nitrates for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil or tadalafil, a potassium-sparing diuretic (amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), a blood thinner, or diabetes medicine, or if you have had a recent heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can add to these. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

06FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

What arginine dose did the blood pressure trials find?

No set amount is shown to work for everyone. Pooled trials used 4 to 24 grams a day for 2 to 24 weeks and saw an average systolic change of about 5 mm Hg (Am Heart J 2011, L-arginine and BP meta-analysis). Your doctor decides what suits you.

Can 2 Melonex capsules match an arginine trial dose?

No. Two capsules hold a 1,000 mg blend, and the two arginine lines can weigh at most 667 mg together. The lowest trial dose was 4,000 mg, so two capsules reach about a sixth of it, at best.

Is a 9 gram arginine dose safe after a heart attack?

No. A trial of 9 grams a day in 153 people after a first heart attack stopped early, with 6 deaths on arginine and none on placebo (ACC, VINTAGE MI trial summary). Anyone with a heart condition should ask a doctor before any arginine product.

Does arginine dose depend on the salt form?

Yes. A salt such as arginine HCl or AKG weighs more than the arginine inside it. Trial doses name the pure amino acid, so a salt weight on a label overstates the arginine you would get.
